Saturday Musings

I find that I am constantly intrigued by the collections of things people have in their homes.  It's so interesting seeing what people surround themselves with.  Home to me is the most important and special place on earth.  Home is where I find solace, rest and happiness and home is where I surround myself with only the things I love.

The more I help people decorate their homes, the more I try to impress upon them that it's not about having the latest and greatest.  It's about filling your home with things you absolutely adore, cherish and hold close to your heart.

Photographer Oberto Gili's New York home was recently featured on NYSD and to say I was intrigued by his collections is an understatement.

Throughout the article he talks about his idea of home and I was particularly interested in this quote which he said a landscape gardener friend of his once said -

“Unless a home becomes a love affair, it is not a success.” You have to love every single little thing—if it doesn’t have a memory, a story, it doesn’t count.

  1. I love that quote, it's so true and I think that can apply to other things in life too.

I'm always fascinated by the stories behind collected pieces in homes too.

    Lovely post!

  4. I love that last quote and live by it...when we were doing our house, our builder was talking about shelves in a certain area...and I kept saying that I couldn't really see it because I didn't have a collection that would fit in the space he was talking about. He said just go to Home Goods, gasp...yuck, every little thing I have has to have a story behind it, or what's the point? I've been so inspired by your work and vignettes that it has really made me step it up a notch and it has been so fun. Thanks for continually inspiring me!

  8. Great quote! I so agree with the idea of home being a love affair. Home is my haven and I come back each day to be restored and comforted. I try to make it cozy and warm.

  10. Oh I so agree with that quote... even if some of those lovely things are temporarily stored in a little box at the back of a shed! I have a few treasures nearby that keep me going. Just a few! I like that... "if it doesn't have a memory, a story, it doesn't count". A-M xx

  11. Thanks for this Anna. I am using the school holidays to sort through the 'stuff' that has been stored in boxes and cupboards for years because I'm too scared to throw it out. I've recently started to feel that I'm drowning in the 'stuff' rather than enjoying the things we care about and that have special memories. These words are a huge help - thank you. Annie x.

  12. Nice. I don't think he has toddlers though... my kids don't share my aesthetic values yet... and my trash is their treasure... I try to celebrate it where I can... and be sly with disposing of the rest...

    PS lovely blog! grace

  14. Exactly! It is not about the greatest and the latest. For me it's how you utilize everything and fit it all together.

  16. I love this room! So rustic and a "messy organizational" style! It is always wonderful to surround yourself with things you love. And it is fascinating to share your "loves" with others...and learn about the things that other people love!
