I can't be credited for finding this fabulous image. Joni posted this over at Cote de Texas the other day and I immediately fell in love with it. It is the work of the famous garden designing couple - Isabel and Julian Bannerman at their own home or should I say estate - Hanham Court. {All of this info was provided by Joni!!}.
I have a few of these old galvanised tubs which would do the trick. Although, tulips won't grow too well here. I'll have to plant them with something like Lavender I suppose. Any other ideas? I also love the wisteria growing so wildly over the house in the background.

ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan of wildly growing Wisteria...think it makes a garden/home look established and romantic! I may have to try this galvanized tub with tulips!
ReplyDeleteSnapdragons can look pretty en masse- I'm not sure if they're your style but they are often found in rambling english cottage style gardens.
ReplyDeleteI have two tubs ... one planted with chives, flowering garlic and tri-colored sage. The other is a still-life with a few random plantings and a collection of seashells. I will post them on my blog soon!

I think this is a heavy lead tub which would help to keep the bulbs cold. I love to see tulips, pale pink and green-white growing out of a cloud of forget-me-nots which flower at the same time. To help them repeat every year, without lifting them each time which is such a bore, plant deep up to 9 inches deep, and when the foliage has died down plant annuals on top.

How about planting your galvinised tubs with colourful Ruby Chard? It's an old heirloom vegetable that waves its cheery red stalks around in a burst of impossible colour. If you plant a mixture, you will have stalks of yellow, ruby red and lime green - a stunning combination. Also, it doubles up as a yummy vegie - good in salad, stir-fry or curry - which kids love because it is delicate.

I fell in love with tulips later in life than I suppose most have but this tulip tub may have helped spawn that love had I not already felt it.
