I like these gardens pictured above because to me they are informal. I don't want a formal garden. I want one which is filled with lots of different plants just like these are. I also adore the gravel pathways which to me seem less formal than paving. The chairs in the top image remind me of the furniture we are now stocking at Black & Spiro which is all handmade by a lovely man down South using timber from his property.
Here are some of the pieces which we are having made at the moment. We are having them custom painted for us in lots of different bright colours. We currently have some white rectangular side tables and one orange round table at the shop.

The lines of the gardens shown are quite formal. Plantings & choice of materials soften the lines.
ReplyDeleteMost clients tell me they don't want a formal landscape then show me pictures of what they do want, and it's all formal.
Smiling inwardly I give them what they want & never use the word 'formal'.

ReplyDeleteI love a messy garden-even these are too neat for me! Plus the messier it is the more it hides damage inflicted by varmints eating your nicest flower buds and choicest ornamental leaves. I also really embrace texture and I have to rely on varigated plants for colour given I only get about 2 whole minutes of sun a day. I love a gravel path too. I once almost killed myself shovelling a whole truckload of gravel onto my garden paths. By myself. In summer. FF x

ReplyDeleteThe plant you were asking about above is Pride of Madiera. They are fairly drought tolerant and are common here in Southern California. They do get quite large and have purple, true blue and light blue flowers.
I used to have a garden back when I was living in my country. Of course nothing special but it was everything we needed. Such a common thing in all the villages and small cities in Greece. Now that I live in London it is such a rare thing.
